  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

All my life I’ve been passionate about writing, even as a child. Little did I know then I would have to wait until I was fifty to fulfil my dream and actually publish my novels.

My family have always been of paramount importance to me, so it seemed natural to put my life as a would-be writer on hold, until my children were settled and happy. There never seemed to be enough hours in the day, especially when my girls were growing up. I’ve always worked jobs that fitted in with my family, as I’m a great believer in what you put into family life is what you’ll get back. In my case it’s worked and I have a wonderful relationship with my girls and my beautiful grandchildren. Time was the only thing I could never control and between fostering teenagers and rescuing guinea pigs, I never seemed to have any left for me!

Finally, I decided it was time to treat myself to some ‘me time’ and try my hand as a proper writer and not just as a hobbyist. Although the theory was good, putting it into practice was another matter. Often I would write during the night hours so as not to upset my family’s routine, old habits die hard.

I don’t know if my books will be successful, but for me it has never been about fame or fortune. I’ve never had either and you don’t miss what you’ve never had. It’s the thrill of finally being able to give people the chance to read them.

I have written several novels in different genres which I’m told is quite unusual. Truth is all of my writing comes from the heart and from some of life’s experiences. One question I’m always asked is where my story lines come from. My answer is simple, like most of my friends I attended the school of hard knocks, but I feel truly blessed to have a large extended family and to have met so many people from so many walks of life, some good, some bad and some decidedly dodgy, but never dull. Without any doubt they have helped to inspire some of my characters, but for the story lines, my colourful imagination has come into play.

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

To my many friends who encouraged me not to give up, my heartfelt thanks to them. They know who they are. My lovely friends on Face book who have read, commented and shared my book snippets, you inspire me!

I also want to thank some very special people who without their help and belief in me, my lifelong dream would never have come true.

My wonderful family, Pete, Michelle, Melissa, and Ruth for their love, patience and understanding.

Ian Paton, my very own earth angel, wonderful friend, critic and inspiration. I would be lost without his support.

Sue Fairman, who for over thirty years has been my confidant, loyal, reliable, honest friend, a lady I hold very close to my heart.

Helen, who is not only my sister-in-law, but my dear friend. Her addiction to my books encouraged me to write more in the series.

Jan Norse, my lifelong friend, whose knowledge and friendship started me on this amazing journey; she also has a special place in my heart.

Shelly Grant, my nutty friend who has put up with my constant moaning whilst preparing my books for publishing and whose encouragement and laughter has meant so much.

Pam, my dear friend who came to my rescue in the eleventh hour and did a fantastic job.

Sallyann Cole, who supports me through thick and thin. Her faith in me is inspiring.

Last but not least my dog Fat Freddy, my loyal, faithful boy who kept me company through all those long lonely night hours when I was writing.

  IN MEMORY

With love to the many family members I’ve lost xx

This book is dedicated with love to six very special people who I feel blessed to have in my life. They are, Ian, Sue, Jan, Helen, Pam and Sallyann for their love, friendship and continued support in all things.

  CHAPTER 1

The twins were playing happily in the nursery with Charlie. The bond between her and the twins had grown stronger every day since their birth eighteen months earlier. Her dad and Maria had moved to Kent when the twins were nine months old, since then Charlie had been a regular visitor. Whenever she had a break from university she would stay over for a few days.

Following in her dad’s footsteps, she was studying law. Mickey had opened another law practice in Kent where she had been offered a junior position. She spent time working there with her dad whenever she could, although she’d told him that when she graduates she will probably work full time at his London practice. Her boyfriend Scott also took up a lot of her time, they’ve been dating for the past year. Maria and Mickey approved of him; he was a bright lad studying business and economics. Slightly older than Charlie at twenty two, but it’s obvious to everyone how much in love they are and that she can wrap him round her little finger.

Scott was meeting Charlie that morning in London because it was her dad’s wedding day. It was to be a quiet wedding at St Augustus. Father Thomas would be the priest to officiate. He had missed Maria since her move to Kent, although he had visited them whenever he was in their area. He certainly wasn’t expecting the huge fairytale wedding that he had presided over a few years earlier when she had married Jimmy and Mickey married Monica. Today’s event would be minuscule by comparison, with only a handful of closest friends and family attending.

Shaun would be giving Maria away and with the absence of Mickey’s sister Fay and her husband Richard, Tony had been chosen as best man. Afterwards they would all go for a meal at Maria’s restaurant.

Maria went to get herself ready. Wearing her hair down just the way Mickey liked it, she looked beautiful and despite her less than tranquil past, she still retained youthful looks.

Finally, when everyone was ready, Mickey carried the twins to the car. Since having them, he had bought a people carrier, although he’d kept his Ferrari, but only using it for work and trips without the girls. Having settled easily into family life, he loved showing all his girls off. He had everything, a stunning bride and three beautiful daughters. Surprisingly, he didn’t miss life in the fast lane; there was the occasional night when he thought about the clubs, but never once did he regret giving them up. He had sold most of his shares to Tony, but being a shrewd businessman he’d kept some as investments. They had retained ownership of Maria’s restaurant and Dixie’s, which they kept as a tribute to Jimmy. He had appointed Billy and Kevin to run Dixie’s full time, allowing them to make all but the most important decisions.

Tony was now the boss, although he still looked upon Mickey as his equal, often asking his advice over work and legal matters.

As they pulled up at the church everyone was waiting. Father Thomas walked over to the car to greet them. Mickey’s parents Den and Mary helped Charlie with the twins, taking them into the church to get them settled. Scott arrived just as they sat down, kissing Charlie in front of her grandparents made her blush.

Monica and George were there having just returned from a three week holiday in Barbados. Maria waved at them as she made her way into the church.

Ann and Shaun sat behind Mickey’s parents to help occupy the twins, their plan had worked quite well until Madeline decided to try and climb over the pews to get to Shaun ending up sitting on his lap as the service continued.

Everyone congratulated them as they left the church after the ceremony. The twins were oblivious to what had just taken place.

“You look beautiful Maria,” said Monica as the two friends embraced.

“So do you Monica and that tan is great! Did you have a good holiday?”

“Better than good,” said Monica with a grin as she waved her left hand in front of Maria to show off a wedding ring.

“Oh my God” said Maria “congratulations, why didn’t you tell us?”

“Because we didn’t know ourselves, our hotel arranged everything for us after George mentioned it. We got married on the beach, it was so romantic.”

Maria called over to Mickey to tell him.

Maria’s restaurant had been closed to the public for the wedding party. Several tables had been pushed together to make one large one, with the happy couple taking prime position at the head.

The twins were seated in high chairs next to them.

When Tony made a short speech about how Maria had tamed Mickey and turned him into a regular family man, everyone laughed.

As the time approached ten, Melanie was already asleep on Shaun’s lap and Madeline was having difficulty staying awake. Maria said it was time to go home.

Charlie wasn’t travelling back with them; she was staying the night with Scott’s and his parent’s. They only lived a few minutes away from the restaurant. The newlyweds thanked everyone for coming.

Mickey had booked a car to take them home, arranging for his own car to be brought back the following day by a couple of the lads.

Maria told Monica to come for dinner the following week; she wanted to hear all about the wedding.

Father Thomas had accepted a lift from the newlyweds. When they dropped him off Maria couldn’t resist a small giggle as they watched him stagger up his path. They waited until he was safely inside before pulling away. The twins were fast asleep as they drove home.

“Babe I’m so happy that you’re finally my wife.”

“The feeling’s mutual darling, I’m so happy you’re my husband.”

When the car pulled up outside the house, she thought to herself that she had everything and more than she’d ever dreamed of. A fabulous country manor house set in its own grounds. It boasted six bedrooms, three bathrooms and four reception rooms, a playroom, study and last but not least a fabulous kitchen with adjoining utility room. At the rear of the property there was a heated indoor swimming pool, complete with sauna.

A local woman called Jean came in twice a week to help with the cleaning and her husband Stan kept the gardens looking glorious.

As a wedding present for his wife, Mickey had a small chapel built in the grounds which Maria loved, but as a full time mother of twins she wouldn’t be able to use it as often as she would like.

Since moving to Kent she attended the local church with the twins every Sunday, even managing to drag Mickey along from time to time. She got on well with the priest, Father Benico Salvi; he was young, in his late twenties with a very modern approach to religion. He was gradually bringing more people into the church especially the youngsters with his modern attitude. Mickey was convinced that Father Benico was gay, but Maria paid little attention whenever he made some derogatory remark about his sexuality.

Through helping out at the Sunday school she had made several new friends, mostly young mums like herself. Although she rarely socialised with them outside of Sunday school, despite several offers, she preferred spending time at home with her family. She loved it when they had friends come and stay for the weekend and she got on particularly well with Mickey’s parents.

Exiting the car, Mickey tipped the driver before suggesting to Maria that they carry a baby each and taking them straight upstairs to
their cots. Melanie didn’t stir, even when her mum took her dress off and changed her nappy. Madeline did protest about being undressed, but she quickly settled once tucked down in her cot. Maria told Mickey she would see him downstairs in a few minutes and for him to pour them a drink.

When she finally appeared, he couldn’t believe his eyes as he looked up and saw her standing in the doorway.

She was wearing a pink baby doll edged with fur and white high heeled shoes. His mouth dropped open as she made her way towards him and sat on his lap. His hands were all over her.

Seductively she asked him to stand up so she could remove his jacket, shirt and tie. Then she undid his trousers and pulled them down along with his boxer shorts.

When she asked him to sit down he pulled her against him and they kissed passionately before she made her way down his body, rolling her tongue over him. His heart was pounding, anticipating what she was about to do.

As she took him in her mouth, he groaned with pleasure, it wasn’t long before he was coming. When she finished, he joked with her about only girlfriends doing that particular act.

“Perhaps I should stop doing it now we’re married then!” she giggled as she sat back down on his lap.

“Please don’t ever stop doing it” he replied before kissing her and fondling her breasts, “you know how much I love it.”

They continued kissing and cuddling until he told her to lie down on the sofa. Doing as he’d asked, he stood looking down at her before he knelt on the floor next to her and gently removed her panties.

Kissing her feet first, he slowly made his way up her leg to her thigh. She flinched as his tongue touched her. After bringing her quickly to orgasm they sat back on the sofa.

Pulling her onto him she straddled across him and they made love. It was wonderful; as she kissed him she thought about the way he loved her. He was so passionate and loving, never getting rough with her or making her do anything she didn’t like. Always enjoying their lovemaking, although she was often tired after looking after the twins all day there had never been a time that she didn’t want him. It was the same for him.
